Empowering Bytes: Commitment over convenience

The central theme of this Empowering Bites episode is the importance of maintaining one's commitments, particularly in the face of life's inevitable challenges.

Nkechi Nwafor-Robinson and Gaby Mammone engage in a candid discussion about the necessity of perseverance, even when circumstances are less than ideal. They share personal anecdotes that illustrate how they have navigated their busy lives while remaining dedicated to their podcasting commitments.

The dialogue serves as a reminder that true commitment transcends fleeting emotions and requires a steadfast resolve to act in accordance with one's promises. Ultimately, they encourage listeners to reflect on their own commitments and to embrace the discipline of following through, regardless of the obstacles that may arise.

Takeaways:

  • Nkechi and Gaby emphasize the importance of commitment, even amidst life's distractions and challenges.
  • When life presents obstacles, it is crucial to remain steadfast in pursuing one's commitments and goals without yielding to circumstances.
  • The hosts advocate for taking consistent, albeit small, actions towards one's objectives, reinforcing that progress is preferable to perfection.
  • They highlight that disempowerment can create a domino effect, leading to further disengagement from personal goals and responsibilities.
  • The discussion underscores that personal integrity and commitment to oneself should prevail, regardless of external circumstances or feelings.

Speaker A:

Great day, amazing human.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Welcome to Empowered at My Skin podcast where our mission is to help 1 billion people in this world think in more empowering ways.

Speaker A:

Empowered humans empower humans.

Speaker A:

So you are in the right place to become a lead domino for empowerment today.

Speaker A:

My name is Nkechi Mwaho Robinson.

Speaker A:

I'm not only your host, but I am a vibrant optimist obsessed to bring you empowering content with every single episode.

Speaker A:

We will bring you weekly content alternating between longer episodes with featured guests and a shorter episode called Empowering Bites where I will be joined by my co host, Gabby Memone.

Speaker A:

So if you're ready, let the show begin.

Speaker A:

Great day, amazing humans.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Welcome to the next episode of Empowering Bites.

Speaker A:

And I'm your girl, Nkeechinwafa Robinson.

Speaker A:

And this is your girl.

Speaker B:

Gabby with 1B.

Speaker A:

Yes, the Gabby 1B is here with me as we record a very short and quick on the run kind of episode.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Because for those of you that are watching, you YouTubers, you can see that Gabby is clear in her car.

Speaker A:

And for those that are listening, you may hear a little bit of an audio difference this time.

Speaker A:

But guess what?

Speaker A:

We're still bringing you this Empowering Bite episode.

Speaker A:

Not missing a beat.

Speaker A:

And that's what we want to talk about.

Speaker A:

That's what we want to talk about.

Speaker A:

We want to talk about how when life throws thins in our path, sometimes we, it's so like for many of us, it's easy to throw, it's easy to throw away the things that you said you were going to be committed to.

Speaker A:

And so we really want to be really honest with you that when this happened, like we know that we have to record, we typically try to batch our episodes.

Speaker A:

We haven't been able to do that because of all the lifing that has been going on.

Speaker A:

I'm on my way out of the country tomorrow.

Speaker A:

Gabby has been inundated in a good way with keynotes and prep here and prep there.

Speaker A:

And so we haven't been able to batch an episode.

Speaker A:

And then I recognize that I'm traveling once I come back into the country next Monday, which meant that I needed an episode for us to publish next Thursday.

Speaker A:

So we're figuring it out.

Speaker A:

And this was her only time.

Speaker A:

It's a short window.

Speaker A:

I have to be like, I have a hard stop because I have to head off to an appointment and.

Speaker A:

But it's only 10 minutes.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

That's what's cool about these Empowering Bites is that they are short, short, chewable bite size recordings.

Speaker B:

And for the listeners.

Speaker B:

I actually had a meeting shortly after this recording, which is why I could only do this in the car ride, just to make sure that I would be on time for that.

Speaker B:

But then it turned out I got sick yesterday and I lost my voice.

Speaker B:

And so I had to move that meeting and use that slot for a doctor's appointment meeting, which I'm on my way to, to make sure that I'm, that I'm cool and I don't have strep or anything like that.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

But the lesson here is you just gotta figure it out.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker B:

We gotta figure it out.

Speaker B:

And you know, we, we stay true to our commitment to each other.

Speaker B:

Life thing happened.

Speaker B:

And so if it means that one of us needs to record in the car, then that's it.

Speaker B:

There's no judgment.

Speaker B:

We just have to continue because that's what our commitment works.

Speaker A:

And I think that, I think that when you make a commitment and I love there's a quote that's that I don't actually know who's the author of this quote, but it says being commitment, true commitment is staying true to what you said you were gonna do long after the feeling in which you said has passed.

Speaker A:

And so like:

Speaker A:

And then they've evolved into empowering bites.

Speaker A:

And that meant.

Speaker A:

And we committed to doing them every other episode which meant that in a 52 year season, 26 episodes have to be an empowering bite episode.

Speaker A:

And so life has, has lifed over the last five years, you know, and, and today is, and this coming episode is no different.

Speaker A:

You know, I thought about some plan B's and Gabby and I just kept twisting and turning and pivoting and figuring out what could work.

Speaker A:

And we found this one window between 9:10am and 9:30am where we can get on for a 10 minute recording while she's in her car.

Speaker A:

And sometimes it's like, do you mind if I'm in my car?

Speaker A:

I'm gonna be wearing a hat.

Speaker A:

I'm not.

Speaker B:

I was like girl, yeah, no makeup.

Speaker A:

We never committed that it had to be perfect.

Speaker A:

We committed that we would it done.

Speaker A:

And, and I know I've said it, I know we've said it on this platform as well is like Brene Brown says, the tenants you do is better than the 60.

Speaker A:

You don't.

Speaker A:

Even if it was going to be a five minute episode comparative to our, you know, the ones where we have time and you know, we, at the end of the day we would See that episode published.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And that's what our commitment to each other was.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And you inspired me, too.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

So thank you.

Speaker B:

I really always look forward to these recordings.

Speaker B:

I look forward to hearing what the listeners have to say.

Speaker B:

And I just.

Speaker B:

I just love it.

Speaker B:

I think we have a commitment.

Speaker B:

We have to follow through.

Speaker B:

We just make it happen.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Even if it's for the five minutes.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And how everyone can use this in their life.

Speaker A:

This came to me.

Speaker A:

Gabby, I know I was cutting you off.

Speaker A:

There is like, last year was a really tough year for me.

Speaker A:

And it's funny because yesterday I delivered a keynote at an organization and a woman came up to me and I guess she caught my age because I.

Speaker A:

,:

Speaker A:

So I put it in there and I said, God, like, did this and put energy in me, like it's no other.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And she came up, she's like, you know, did you notice there was a difference when you crossed over to 50 and, like, you just couldn't wake up anymore?

Speaker A:

I said, yeah, I crossed over, but there was no option not to continue to wake up at my time and get to the gym.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Like, it's not about how I feel, it's about what I've committed about what's going to be true to me.

Speaker A:

As in K Chin Waffle Robinson.

Speaker A:

What are the things I want to be secure, like, other than like, God, I'm, you know.

Speaker A:

But what are the things that I want to be true?

Speaker A:

When you talk about who I am as a human being, and it's that this girl gets up consistently at 4 o' clock, somewhere between 4 and 5am in the morning to get to the gym.

Speaker A:

It's not a feeling thin, it's an integrity thin.

Speaker A:

And it doesn't matter if I cross over 50, it doesn't matter if I cross over 60, if I am able.

Speaker A:

Able, because there's a lot of people that are not able.

Speaker A:

But even if you're not able, you will be able to do something else.

Speaker A:

You have to figure out, what is that thin?

Speaker A:

Like, how do you then pivot?

Speaker A:

But don't give up?

Speaker A:

I think that's what.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I think that's what happens.

Speaker A:

I always said I never wanted to live a life where I knew what it was like not to work out.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I love that.

Speaker B:

You know, for anyone that's watching or listening, think about your life currently.

Speaker B:

What is that thing that, you know, you probably should do, whether it's your taxes, whether it's calling you know, a family member, whatever it is.

Speaker B:

What's that one thing that you know, you probably should do but are putting off.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

Then take a look at yourself.

Speaker B:

And you know, and Catchy has a wonderful, a wonderful mantra which is don't drop the lead or don't drop your lead.

Speaker A:

Don't drop the lead.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

Don't drop the lead.

Speaker B:

And so there's another episode I think prior to this one.

Speaker B:

Correct.

Speaker B:

Which is about don't drop the lead.

Speaker B:

Have a listen.

Speaker B:

It's brilliant.

Speaker B:

And you know, the whole point to this is stay committed.

Speaker B:

Stay committed to your word.

Speaker B:

And like you said, if it's just a little piece, a small step, a little, little action, five minute, whatever, at least you're getting into the motion of doing it.

Speaker B:

I, I, and that's, you know, no matter what.

Speaker A:

No, no matter what.

Speaker A:

And you know, it's interesting because I was actually thinking about like, you know, people in my, in my network who often talk about like, I started a new job and as a result I like, I can't work out.

Speaker A:

Like I haven't been able to get a workout in.

Speaker A:

And I, and I was like, you know what, like if, if getting a new job has now prevented you from doing something that's important to you, one, I'm gonna, I'm gonna just, I'm just gonna just challenge the excuse because I also recognize excuses do not burn calories per hour.

Speaker A:

But we do what, we don't do what we have to do, we do what we want to do.

Speaker B:

Yeah, that's the difference.

Speaker A:

And so there was a conversation that probably need to be held or had that said that these are my boundaries, like I'm gonna come to your organization.

Speaker A:

I will also.

Speaker A:

But you know, do know that for my health, for my mental state, for me to be able to show up fully in, in who I am as a human being and deliver for the organization.

Speaker A:

I don't miss my workouts, you know, and maybe you can compromise.

Speaker A:

Maybe there's some days where, you know, I understand I have to be in at, I don't know, 8 o' clock and so on those days.

Speaker A:

But it's, it's, I don't know, like yesterday I had a 6:30am makeup call and I, I remember mentioning it to my husband.

Speaker A:

I said, I am going to have to, I even told this woman at the gym who for makes me always feel like I'm late.

Speaker A:

Anytime I'm walking into the gym at 5, she's walking out and she's getting ready to go to work.

Speaker A:

Like she works at 9 to 5.

Speaker A:

But, but she's like, yeah, I need to get in before the humans arrive.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So, so I was like, what time do you get in?

Speaker A:

She says, I get in by four.

Speaker A:

And I said, okay, you know what?

Speaker A:

So I'm, I set my alarm an hour earlier and I got up at 3:10.

Speaker A:

I gone to the gym for 405 and I worked out for an hour and a half and then got showered and was, was home in time to do my makeup at 6:30.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

You know, so I can get out of my house and get to the venue for, for my talk.

Speaker A:

Anyway.

Speaker A:

So it, it's just, it always, it always works.

Speaker A:

And you, and it can't be once you start to talk about, oh, but I'm going to feel tired and you know, this any other.

Speaker A:

Then suddenly, Suddenly.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

And, and I think life just because you know what happens.

Speaker A:

I.

Speaker A:

Sorry.

Speaker A:

And I, I know I'm talking a lot, but, but I think there's a, like, it's just like I always talk about empower people.

Speaker A:

Empower people.

Speaker A:

But disempowerment also disempowers.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

The opposite is also true.

Speaker A:

And so I do believe that if you continue to give up on yourself, there's a domino effect that gets created.

Speaker A:

That if you give up on yourself, then chances are something through that day is also going to be something that you give up.

Speaker A:

Maybe you give up on eating well and then if you give up on eating well, then maybe you give up on.

Speaker A:

You know what I mean?

Speaker A:

Like, I think there's also a dominant effect in the opposite direction as well.

Speaker A:

So just, I mean, just like there's just juxtaposition between, between the two and just choose which side you want to be on.

Speaker A:

And hopefully, you know, you state you, you get committed, you get committed to that, to a side.

Speaker B:

I love that and I love that you said sometimes the conditions aren't perfect, but the commitment still stands.

Speaker B:

We have to make a commitment to each other, to ourselves.

Speaker B:

The only boss that is yourself.

Speaker A:

Well, mine is God.

Speaker A:

God's my boss.

Speaker A:

God's my boss.

Speaker B:

Okay, that's a whole other conversation, but yes, yes, for sure.

Speaker B:

But the point here is that you control your actions.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

You control your subconscious mind, your decisions.

Speaker B:

And so, so you know that it was just cool how we just came up with this topic because we just.

Speaker A:

It's true, it's real.

Speaker A:

We're living, we're living it right now.

Speaker A:

Living it right now.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And we're living it so strongly that it's 9:30.

Speaker A:

I gotta say I'm out.

Speaker B:

We gotta go.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And this is where we cut it off.

Speaker A:

And to anyone that's listening, I hope you enjoy this.

Speaker A:

I hope you stay committed to the goals.

Speaker A:

And if you haven't start and I'm ink and I'm gabby with one b and we're out.

Speaker A:

There you have it.

Speaker A:

I trust that you are feeling more empowered in your skin.

Speaker A:

As the late Dr.

Speaker A:

Maya Angelou said, when you get, you give.

Speaker A:

When you learn, you teach.

Speaker A:

So it would mean so much for us at empowered of my skin, Inc.

About the Podcast

The Empowered in My Skin Podcast
A podcast designed to help humans everywhere think in ways that is empowering.
This Podcast is all about helping humans think in ways that is empowering. Empowered humans, empower humans and our goal at Empowered in My Skin is to help develop one billion humans who are lead dominos for empowerment. Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, etc., everyone deserves to be empowered in the skin that they are in.

Empowered humans are thriving humans. It is our birthright to thrive. When we own our thrive, we are operating from a position of empowerment, and celebrating life in the present moment without fear. It is human nature to feel uncertain, but why does it have to take us away from our thrive, our creativity, and throw us off balance?

If we can recognize that being empowered is us choosing to accept all that is, then we have the ability to step into clarity and live in the present moment. Our "now" is all that we have and where our infinite empowered energy resides.
